daily reading 10.1 (Daniel 7:19–25)

 5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

In our opening prayer this week we ask God to calm us for Jesus' sake:

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last. Amen.

Daniel 7:19–25

  • "Then I wanted to be clear about the fourth beast, the one different from all the others, extremely terrifying, with iron teeth and bronze claws, devouring, crushing, and trampling with its feet whatever was left.
  •  20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three fell-- the horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly, and that looked bigger than the others.
  •  21 "As I was watching, this horn waged war against the holy ones and was prevailing over them  22 until the Ancient of Days arrived and a judgment was given in favor of the holy ones of the Most High, for the time had come, and the holy ones took possession of the kingdom.
  •  23 "This is what he said: 'The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, different from all the other kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth, trample it down, and crush it.  24 The ten horns are ten kings who will rise from this kingdom.
  • "'Another king, different from the previous ones, will rise after them and subdue three kings. 25 He will speak words against the Most High and oppress the holy ones of the Most High. He will intend to change religious festivals and laws, and the holy ones will be handed over to him for a time, times, and half a time."

For yourself pray:

  • That God gives you insight into this world's last days

For others pray

  • That God gives patience and hope to churches undergoing severe government persecution

A psalm to listen to, as time allows:
