daily reading 13.1 (Daniel 11:2–6)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer this week:

My song is love unknown,
My Savior’s love to me;
Love to the loveless shown,
That they might lovely be.
O who am I, that for my sake
My Lord should take, frail flesh and die?

He came from his blest throne
Salvation to bestow;
But such disdain! So few
The longed-for Christ would know:
But O! my Friend, my Friend indeed,
Who at my need his life did spend.

Sometimes they strew his way,
And his sweet praises sing;
Resounding all the day
Hosannas to their King:
Then “Crucify!” is all their breath,
And for his death they thirst and cry.

Why, what has my Lord done?
What makes this rage and spite?
He made the lame to run,
He gave the blind their sight,
Sweet injuries! Yet they at these
Themselves displease, and ’gainst him rise.

They rise and needs will have
My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they save,
The Prince of life they slay,
Yet cheerful he to suffering goes,
That he his foes from death might free.

In life, no house, no home
My Lord on earth might have;
In death no friendly tomb
But what a stranger gave.
What may I say? Heav’n was his home;
But mine the tomb wherein he lay.

Here might I stay and sing,
No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King!
Never was grief like thine.
This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise
I all my days could gladly spend.

Daniel 11:2–6

  • (The angel over the river told Daniel) "Now I will tell you the truth.
  • "Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth (Xerxes) will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.
  • 3 Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants. (This is Alexander the Great.)
  • 4 But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven, but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them.
  • 5 "The king of the South will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his.
  • 6 After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to seal the agreement. She will not retain power, and his strength will not endure. She will be given up, together with her entourage, her father, and the one who supported her during those times.
Helpful notes on Daniel 11:2–11:6

For yourself pray:

  • That God, who sees all of history in one eternal now in Christ, sees you through your day

For others pray:

  • That God spreads his good news in Egypt

A psalm to listen to, as time allows:

  • Psalm 41 (YouTube, soloist with guitar)
