daily reading 16.1 (Ezra 1:5–11)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this glorious Easter week:

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing
Praise to our victorious King,
Who has washed us in the tide
Flowing from his pierced side.
Alleluia!

Mighty victim from on high,
Hell’s fierce powers beneath you lie;
You have conquered in the fight,
You have brought us life and light:
Alleluia!

Now no more can death appall,
Now no more the grave entrall;
You have opened paradise,
And your saints in you shall rise.
Alleluia!

Easter triumph, Easter joy,
This alone can sin destroy;
From sin’s power, Lord, set us free,
Newborn souls in you to be.
Alleluia!
Father, who the crown shall give,
Savior, by whose death we live,
Spirit, guide through all our days,
Three in one, your name we praise.
Alleluia!

Ezra 1:5–11

  • So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites—everyone whose spirit God had roused—prepared to go up and rebuild the LORD's house in Jerusalem. 6 All their neighbors supported them with silver articles, gold, goods, livestock, and valuables, in addition to all that was given as a freewill offering.
  • 7 King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the LORD's house that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and had placed in the house of his gods. 8 King Cyrus of Persia had them brought out under the supervision of Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah.
  • 9 This was the inventory:
    • 30 gold basins,
    • 1,000 silver basins,
    • 29 silver knives,
    • 10 30 gold bowls,
    • 410 various silver bowls, and
    • 1,000 other articles.
  • 11 The gold and silver articles totaled 5,400. Sheshbazzar brought all of them when the exiles went up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

The Cyrus Cylinder

For yourself pray:

  • That God makes you willing by his Spirit to face hardships and make sacrifices to help the people of God build his church

For others pray:

  • That God gives energy in Christ to pastors who are weary

A psalm to listen to, as time allows:
