daily reading 19.5 (Haggai 1:1–6)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this Easter week:

Christ be my leader by night as by day;
Safe through the darkness for he is the way.
Gladly I follow, my future his care,
Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

Christ be my teacher in age as in youth,
Drifting or doubting for he is the truth.
Grant me to trust him; though shifting as sand,
Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

Christ be my Savior in calm as in strife;
Death cannot hold me, for he is the life.
Nor darkness nor doubting nor sin and its stain
Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign. Amen.

Haggai 1:1–6

  • In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
  • 2 "The LORD of Armies says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt."
  • 3 The word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
  • 4 "Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?"
  • 5 Now, the LORD of Armies says this: "Think carefully about your ways: 6 You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to be happy. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it."
Helpful notes on Haggai 1:1–6

For yourself pray:

  • That God leads you in Christ to put first things first

For others pray:

  • That God gives your congregation the right spokesman for him at the most critical moment

A psalm to listen to, as time allows:
