daily reading 24.2 (Zechariah 5:1–4)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this Easter week:

1      When peace like a river flows on in my way,
        when sorrows like sea billows roll–
        whatever my lot, you have taught me to say,
        it is well, it is well with my soul.
        Refrain: It is well with my soul,
        it is well, it is well with my soul.

2     Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
        let this blest assurance control,
        that Christ has regarded my helpless estate
        and has shed his own blood for my soul.
        Refrain: It is well with my soul,
        it is well, it is well with my soul.

3      My sin—oh, the bliss of this glorious thought—
        my sin, not in part, but the whole,
        is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more:
        praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
        Refrain: It is well with my soul,
        it is well, it is well with my soul.

4      And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
        the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
        the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend;
        even so, it is well with my soul.
        Refrain: It is well with my soul,
        it is well, it is well with my soul.

Zechariah 5:1–4

  • I looked up again and saw a flying scroll. 1 "What do you see?" he asked me.
  • "I see a flying scroll," I replied, "thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide."
  • 2 Then he said to me, "This is the curse that is going out over the whole land, for everyone who is a thief, contrary to what is written on one side, has gone unpunished, and everyone who swears falsely, contrary to what is written on the other side, has gone unpunished. 3 I will send it out,"—this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies—"and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by my name. It will stay inside his house and destroy it along with its timbers and stones."

Helpful notes on Zechariah 5:1–4

For yourself pray:

  • That in Christ you don't treat God's holy law like a small thing, like just a minor piece of paper

For others pray:

  • That God glorifies his holy name by spreading the good news of his Son by his Spirit in the United Arab Emirates

A psalm to listen to, as time allows:
