daily reading 27.2 (Zechariah 9:1–8)
5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023
Our opening prayer for this week:
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.
Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell;
Come ye before gim and rejoice.
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
Without our aid he did us make;
We are his folk, he doth us feed,
And for his sheep he doth us take.
O enter then his gates with praise;
Approach with joy his courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless his name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
For why? the Lord our God is good;
His mercy is for ever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
The God whom heaven and earth adore,
From men and from the angel host
Be praise and glory evermore.
Zechariah 9:1–8
- A pronouncement: The word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrach, and Damascus is its resting place—for the eyes of humanity and all the tribes of Israel are on the LORD— 2 and also against Hamath, which borders it, as well as Tyre and Sidon, though they are very shrewd.
- 3 Tyre has built herself a fortress; she has heaped up silver like dust and gold like the dirt of the streets.
- 4 Listen! The Lord will impoverish her and cast her wealth into the sea; she herself will be consumed by fire.
- 5 Ashkelon will see it and be afraid; Gaza too, and will writhe in great pain, as will Ekron, for her hope will fail. There will cease to be a king in Gaza, and Ashkelon will become uninhabited.
- 6 A mongrel people will live in Ashdod, and I will destroy the pride of the Philistines.
- 7 I will remove the blood from their mouths and the abhorrent things from between their teeth. Then they too will become a remnant for our God; they will become like a clan in Judah and Ekron like the Jebusites.
- 8 I will encamp at my house as a guard, against those who march back and forth, and no oppressor will march against them again, for now I have seen with my own eyes.
