daily reading 47.4 (Nehemiah 8:9–12)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this week:

Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee,
And hail him as your matchless King through all eternity.

Crown him the virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won which now his brow adorn;
Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem;
The root from which all mercy flows, the Babe of Bethlehem.

Crown him the Son of God, before the worlds began,
And you who tread where he has trod, crown him the Son of Man;
Who every grief has known that wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for his own, that all in him may rest.

Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Amen.

Nehemiah 8:9–12

  • Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, "This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep." For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law.
  • 10 Then he said to them, "Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, because the joy of the LORD is your strength."
  • 11 And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Be still, since today is holy. Don't grieve."
  • 12 Then all the people began to eat and drink, send portions, and have a great celebration, because they had understood the words that were explained to them.

For yourself pray:

  • That the joy of the Lord would be your strength today

For others pray:

  • That God gives your whole family a new, lasting spirit of thankfulness

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
