daily reading 47.5 (Nehemiah 8:13–18)
5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023
Our opening prayer for this week:
Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee,
And hail him as your matchless King through all eternity.
Crown him the virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won which now his brow adorn;
Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem;
The root from which all mercy flows, the Babe of Bethlehem.
Crown him the Son of God, before the worlds began,
And you who tread where he has trod, crown him the Son of Man;
Who every grief has known that wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for his own, that all in him may rest.
Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Amen.
Nehemiah 8:13–18
- On the second day, the family heads of all the people, along with the priests and Levites, assembled before the scribe Ezra to study the words of the law.
- 14 They found written in the law how the LORD had commanded through Moses that the Israelites should dwell in shelters during the festival of the seventh month.
- 15 So they proclaimed and spread this news throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make shelters, just as it is written."
- 16 The people went out, brought back branches, and made shelters for themselves on each of their rooftops and courtyards, the court of the house of God, the square by the Water Gate, and the square by the Ephraim Gate.
- 17 The whole community that had returned from exile made shelters and lived in them. The Israelites had not celebrated like this from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day. And there was tremendous joy.
- 18 Ezra read out of the book of the law of God every day, from the first day to the last. The Israelites celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day there was an assembly, according to the ordinance.
For yourself pray:
- That God renews your faith, understanding, and wonder through his word
For others pray:
- That God gives your whole congregation tremendous joy in Christ in the new Jerusalem
A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
- Psalm 134 (YouTube, duet)
