daily reading 10.5 (Daniel 8:15–18)

 5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

In our opening prayer this week we ask God to calm us for Jesus' sake:

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last. Amen.

Daniel 8:15–18

  • While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there stood before me someone who appeared to be a man.
  • 16 I heard a human voice calling from the middle of the Ulai: "Gabriel, explain the vision to this man."
  • 17 So he approached where I was standing; when he came near, I was terrified and fell facedown. "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision refers to the time of the end."
  • 18 While he was speaking to me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, made me stand up,
Helpful notes on Daniel 8:15–18

For yourself pray:

  • That God keeps you from compromising anything in his word

For others pray

  • That God today upholds and strengthens the most frightened person you know

A psalm to listen to, as time allows:
