daily reading 34.2 (Esther 5:1–5a)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this week:

Lord Jesus Christ, the church’s head,
You are her one foundation;
In you she trusts, before you bows,
And waits for your salvation.
Built on this rock secure,
Your church shall endure
Though all the world decay
And all things pass away.
Oh, hear, oh, hear us, Jesus!

Help us to serve you evermore
With hearts both pure and lowly;
And may your word, that light divine,
Shine on in splendor holy
That we repentance show,
In faith ever grow;
The power of sin destroy
And evils that annoy.
Oh, make us faithful Christians.

And for your gospel let us dare
To sacrifice all treasure;
Teach us to bear your blessed cross,
To find in you all pleasure.
Oh, grant us steadfastness
In joy and distress,
Lord, for your mercy’s sake,
Let us by grace partake
Of endless joy and glory. Amen.

Esther 5:1–5a

  • On the third day, Esther dressed in her royal clothing and stood in the inner courtyard of the palace facing it. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the royal courtroom, facing its entrance.
  • 2 As soon as the king saw Queen Esther standing in the courtyard, she gained favor in his eyes. The king extended the gold scepter in his hand toward Esther, and she approached and touched the tip of the scepter.
  • 3 "What is it, Queen Esther?" the king asked her. "Whatever you want, even to half the kingdom, will be given to you."
  • 4 "If it pleases the king," Esther replied, "may the king and Haman come today to the banquet I have prepared for them."
  • 5 The king said, "Hurry, and get Haman so we can do as Esther has requested."
Helpful notes on Esther 5:1–5a

For yourself pray:

  • That God uses your flaws for the good of others

For others pray:

  • That for the glory of his name God spreads the kingdom of the Son he loves on the Cocos Islands

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
