daily reading 34.3 (Esther 5:5b–8)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this week:

Lord Jesus Christ, the church’s head,
You are her one foundation;
In you she trusts, before you bows,
And waits for your salvation.
Built on this rock secure,
Your church shall endure
Though all the world decay
And all things pass away.
Oh, hear, oh, hear us, Jesus!

Help us to serve you evermore
With hearts both pure and lowly;
And may your word, that light divine,
Shine on in splendor holy
That we repentance show,
In faith ever grow;
The power of sin destroy
And evils that annoy.
Oh, make us faithful Christians.

And for your gospel let us dare
To sacrifice all treasure;
Teach us to bear your blessed cross,
To find in you all pleasure.
Oh, grant us steadfastness
In joy and distress,
Lord, for your mercy’s sake,
Let us by grace partake
Of endless joy and glory. Amen.

Esther 5:5b–8

  • So the king and Haman went to the banquet Esther had prepared. 6 While drinking the wine, the king asked Esther, "Whatever you ask will be given to you. Whatever you want, even to half the kingdom, will be done."
  •  7 Esther answered, "This is my petition and my request: 8 If I have found favor in the eyes of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and perform my request, may the king and Haman come to the banquet I will prepare for them. Tomorrow I will do what the king has asked."
Helpful notes on Esther 5:5b–8

For yourself pray:

  • That God in Christ makes good come out of bad the next time you lose your nerve

For others pray:

  • That God gives new students starting school in your area all they need for their good and for his glory

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:

  • Psalm 104 (YouTube, boys' choir and orchestra)
