daily reading 47.2 (Nehemiah 8:1–5)
5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023
Our opening prayer for this week:
Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee,
And hail him as your matchless King through all eternity.
Crown him the virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won which now his brow adorn;
Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem;
The root from which all mercy flows, the Babe of Bethlehem.
Crown him the Son of God, before the worlds began,
And you who tread where he has trod, crown him the Son of Man;
Who every grief has known that wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for his own, that all in him may rest.
Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Amen.
Nehemiah 8:1–5
- When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, all the people gathered together at the square in front of the Water Gate. They asked the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses that the LORD had given Israel.
- 2 On the first day of the seventh month, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly of men, women, and all who could listen with understanding.
- 3 While he was facing the square in front of the Water Gate, he read out of it from daybreak until noon before the men, the women, and those who could understand. All the people listened attentively to the book of the law.
- 4 The scribe Ezra stood on a high wooden platform made for this purpose. Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah stood beside him on his right; to his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
- 5 Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people, since he was elevated above everyone. As he opened it, all the people stood up.
For yourself pray:
- That the word of God you most recently heard comforts you and changes you
For others pray:
- That God by his Spirit spreads the good news of the kingdom of the Son he loves on Norfolk Island
A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
- Psalm 131 (YouTube, duet)
