daily reading 48.1 (Nehemiah 9:1–5)
5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023
Our opening prayer for this week:
Crown him the Lord of love, behold his hands and side,
Those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright.
Crown him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above,
Crown him the King to whom is given the wondrous name of Love.
Crown him with many crowns, as thrones before him fall;
Crown him, you kings, with many crowns, for he is King of all.
Crown him the Lord of lords, who over all must reign,
Who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for everyone was slain,
Now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing
Their songs before him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King.
Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For you have died for me;
Your praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity. Amen.
Nehemiah 9:1–5
- On the twenty-fourth day of this month the Israelites assembled; they were fasting, wearing sackcloth, and had put dust on their heads.
- 2 Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners, and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.
- 3 While they stood in their places, they read from the book of the law of the LORD their God for a fourth of the day and spent another fourth of the day in confession and worship of the LORD their God.
- 4 Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani stood on the raised platform built for the Levites and cried out loudly to the LORD their God.
- 5 Then the Levites–Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah–said, "Stand up. Blessed be the LORD your God from everlasting to everlasting." Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.
For yourself pray:
- That God's word moves you to turn from your sin to God's way
For others pray:
- That God moves the leaders of your church body to lead well for his glory
A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
- Psalm 135 (YouTube, duet)
