daily reading 48.5 (Nehemiah 9:16–21)
5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023
Our opening prayer for this week:
Crown him the Lord of love, behold his hands and side,
Those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright.
Crown him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above,
Crown him the King to whom is given the wondrous name of Love.
Crown him with many crowns, as thrones before him fall;
Crown him, you kings, with many crowns, for he is King of all.
Crown him the Lord of lords, who over all must reign,
Who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for everyone was slain,
Now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing
Their songs before him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King.
Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For you have died for me;
Your praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity. Amen.
Nehemiah 9:16–21
- "But our ancestors acted arrogantly; they became stiff-necked and did not listen to your commands.
- 17 "They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love, and you did not abandon them.
- 18 "Even after they had cast an image of a calf for themselves and said, 'This is your god who brought you out of Egypt,' and they had committed terrible blasphemies, 19 you did not abandon them in the wilderness because of your great compassion. During the day the pillar of cloud never turned away from them, guiding them on their journey. And during the night the pillar of fire illuminated the way they should go.
- 20 "You sent your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. 21 You provided for them in the wilderness forty years, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell."
For yourself pray:
- That God gives you a deeper and deeper appreciation for his goodness
For others pray:
- That God is patient and forgiving to your family for Jesus' sake
A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
- Psalm 137 (YouTube, soloist with guitar)
