daily reading 49.2 (Nehemiah 9:32–38)
5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023
Our opening prayer for this week:
The advent of our King
Our prayers must now employ,
And we must hymns of welcome sing
In strains of holy joy.
The everlasting Son
Incarnate deigns to be;
Himself a servant’s form puts on
To set His servants free.
O Zion’s Daughter, rise
To meet your lowly King,
Nor let your faithless heart despise
The peace He comes to bring.
As Judge, on clouds of light,
He soon will come again
And his true members all unite
With him in bliss to reign.
Before the dawning day
Let sin’s dark deeds be gone,
The sinful self be put away,
The new self all put on.
All glory to the Son,
Who comes to set us free,
With Father, Spirit, ever One,
Through all eternity. Amen.
Nehemiah 9:32–38
- So now, our God—the great, mighty, and awe-inspiring God who keeps his gracious covenant—do not view lightly all the hardships that have afflicted us, our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the Assyrian kings until today.
- 33 You are righteous concerning all that has happened to us, because you have acted faithfully, while we have acted wickedly.
- 34 Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey your law or listen to your commands and warnings you gave them.
- 35 When they were in their kingdom, with your abundant goodness that you gave them, and in the spacious and fertile land you set before them, they would not serve you or turn from their wicked ways.
- 36 Here we are today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so that they could enjoy its fruit and its goodness. Here we are—slaves in it!
- 37 Its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have set over us, because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress.
- 38 In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement in writing on a sealed document containing the names of our leaders, Levites, and priests.
