daily reading 13.5 (Daniel 11:25–28)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023 Our opening prayer this week: My song is love unknown, My Savior’s love to me; Love to the loveless shown, That they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake My Lord should take, frail flesh and die? He came from his blest throne Salvation to bestow; But such disdain! So few The longed-for Christ would know: But O! my Friend, my Friend indeed, Who at my need his life did spend. Sometimes they strew his way, And his sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King: Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, And for his death they thirst and cry. Why, what has my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight, Sweet injuries! Yet they at these Themselves displease, and ’gainst him rise. They rise and needs will have My dear Lord made away; A murderer they save, The Prince of life they slay, Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, That he his foes from death might fre...

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023 Our opening prayer this week: I love my great Lord whose mercy has heard and answered my cry; to God I will call till the day that I die. The shackles of death had pulled me beneath and close to the grave; but then I cried out to the Lord who can save. My soul, take your rest! The Lord had so blessed and granted to you protection and confidence, timely and true. From death and its fears, from stumbling and tears, O Lord, you saved me to live, and to walk with you, faithful and free. How can I repay what God gives today for me and for all? Your cup I shall welcome, your name I will call. My praises I will in public fulfil; whatever shall come your service is freedom, your presence is home. Lord God, I shall raise thank-offerings of praise your love to acclaim: O sing Hallelujah, and bow to the name! All praise now be given to the Father in heaven, all praise through the Son, all praise in the Spirit: praise God, everyon...

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023 Our opening prayer this week: Lord, hear me in your faithfulness; Reply in your great might. Judge not your servant; none who lives Is righteous in your sight. My enemy has sought my life And crushed me to the ground; And made me live in darkness like The dead, no longer found. My spirit faints within me, Lord, My heart is desolate; Yet I remember your past deeds, All that your hands have set. My soul gasps like a thirsty land, My hands in prayer are spread. Lord, hear me. Do not hide your face, Lest I be like the dead. At daybreak let me find your love; I know that you are true. Show me the road that I must walk; I lift my soul to you. And save me from my enemies; I flee to you in need. Teach me to do what pleases you; Let your good Spirit lead.   5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023 In our opening prayer this week we ask God to calm us for Jesus' sake: Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change, He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake To guide the future, as He has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below. Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart, And all is darkened in the vale of tears, Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart, Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears. Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay From His own fullness all He takes away. Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on When we shall be forever ...

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023 Our opening prayer this week: Jesus, tempted in the desert, Lonely, hungry, filled with dread: “Use your pow’r,” the tempter tells him; “Turn these barren rocks to bread.   “Not alone by bread, he answers, “Can the human heart be filled. Only by the Word of mercy Is our deepest hunger stilled!” Jesus, tempted in the temple, High above its ancient wall: “Throw yourself from lofty turret; Angels wait to break your fall!”   Jesus shuns such empty marvels, Feats that fickle crowds request: “God, whose grace protects, preserves us, We must never vainly test.” Jesus, tempted on the mountain By the lure of vast domain: “Fall before me! Be my servant! Glory you are sure to gain!” Jesus sees the dazzling vision, Turns his eyes another way: “God alone deserves our homage! God alone I will obey!” When we face temptation’s power, Lonely, struggling, filled with dread, Christ, who knew the devil’s hour, Come and be ...
