daily reading 44.3 (Nehemiah 4:1–3)

5-days-a-week through Daniel and other late OT books in 2023

Our opening prayer for this week:

Though I may speak with bravest fire
And have the gift to all inspire
And have not love, my words are vain—
As sounding brass— and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess
And, striving so, my love profess
But not be given by love within,
The profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come; our hearts control.
Our spirits long to be made whole.
Let inward love guide every deed.
By this we worship and are freed. Amen.

Nehemiah 4:1–3

  • When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious. He mocked the Jews
  • 2 before his colleagues and the powerful men of Samaria, and said, "What are these pathetic Jews doing? Can they restore it by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they ever finish it? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble?"
  • 3 Then Tobiah the Ammonite, who was beside him, said, "Indeed, even if a fox climbed up what they are building, he would break down their stone wall!"
Helpful notes on Nehemiah 4:1–3

For yourself pray:

  • That through his Word, by his Spirit, Jesus gives you strength for today's delays and miseries

For others pray:

  • That God gives your congregation hope when others mock you

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
